PEN International launched a press statement due to November 15, Day of the Imprisoned Writer that was started to draw public attention to writers, translators, journalists and publishers across the world who are arrested, convicted, victimized or under threat. Five people are chosen as focus each year for the day. The selected people for 2018 were arrested journalists Shahidul Alam, Dawit Isaa, Wael Abbas and Oleg Sentsov from Bangladesh, Eritrea, Egypt and Ukraine.
PEN Turkey made a written statement as well for November 15, Day of the Imprisoned Writer and reprimanded the arrest and oppression against journalists. “On the other hand, we find the situation of 123 journalists and writers, who are arrested due to their opinions and writings in our country as part of anti-democratic applications, unacceptable,” the organization stated.
